Theme & Artistic vision of "Echoes in Dreams"
When the global concern about cultural integration, the questions about embracing diversity, issues on immigrants, migrations, insiders/outsiders, the constant dialogue on how to preserve traditions yet connecting who we are and how society will become in relation to the contemporary on-going changes, have never been so penetrating and urgently interrogated day in and day out. We as theatre makers - what shall we make, and what role should we take has became blazing.
Being borne in the colonial period, and pressing through the hybrid post-colonial transitional era : how could our experience engage in these dialogues, through our practices?
We believe theatre is a space for opening perspectives, people who shared different values and backgrounds are invited to share the same space, witnessing the same process through performing arts. And through this intimate contact, to find out how they respond to certain issues, and also perhaps, the possibility to share experience through a collective voice , or to shift perspectives.
In terms of collaborations, the way we work with the design elements, we tend to work towards more like a ’total theatre’ outcome.
So the audience are invited to engage in a more live experience. Instead of a 'classical narrative', we create works that aim to engage the audience more on a subconscious level. Through the live exchange of energies through the physical bodies in an intimate space, it’s shared by what’s happening on stage, and also the audience’s imagination and sensations.
We believe that is a great possible way for a person to listen deeply, and the possibility to become awake, or change from within.
Inspired by Portuguese writer José Saramago’s short story “The Centaur”, Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung’s “Memories, Dreams, Reflections”, and a guitar suite by Argentinian composer and guitarist José Luis Merlin:
1. Suite del Recuredo
2. Sueno Con Caballos (Dream with horses)
3. Cinco Canciones De Amor (Five Love Songs)
Echoes in Dream is a journey of us, both as people transiting in our times, as well as theatre artists, responding to the theme of reminiscence and exile, displacements and searching for a new identity through healing from the past, and being present with where we stand. This physical performance will be set in an intimate setting with glimmering lights drift through space and time, about our protagonists surfacing and resurfacing, pulling, exiling, dancing, letting go, and celebrating.
